Residents of Wetheral Road in Owerri Imo state were
thrown into a frenzy today when a gang of armed robbers
numbering four stormed the Zenith Bank located at
Wetheral road and shot sporadically with the intent of
carting away with huge sums of money. However the police
in the city intervened and a gun battle ensued which led to
the killing of one of the robbery suspects while police men
and other people sustained various gunshot injuries.

INCIDENT REPORT FROM IMO POLICE COMMAND:
ARMED ROBBERY ATTACK
Today at about 1510hrs, there was distress call that zenith
bank situated along Wetheral road Owerri was under attack.
The CP Command Imo State CP Taiwo Lakanu, fdc led a
combined team of Police patrol and Detectives to the scene.
On Arrival, the operatives engaged the four armed robbers
that arrived the bank with an ash colour Toyota Camry in a
shoot out. At the end of the shoot out, three Police men
sustained various degrees of gun shot injuries. One of the
armed robbers was short dead and one AK47 Rifle with 100
rds of Ammunition that was earlier snatched from a
policeman on 24/11/2016 was recovered from the dead
Armed robber with three magazines. Others robbers
escaped with serious gun shot injuries. The wounded
Policemen are receiving treatment in the hospital. Police
operatives is intensifying patrols for the arrest of the fleeing
robbers. The robbers could not gain entrance into the
banking hall following the swift response of Police
operatives.

7 persons kidnapped in Epe, Lagos

Armed men suspected to be kidnappers
have abducted seven persons in the
Igbodu, Epe area of Lagos state. According
to reports, the victims, 5 of them workers
on a farm and two others who are
members of the Oodua Peoples Congress,
were kidnapped yesterday morning as they
made their way to the farm. No word has
been heard from their abductors.

Man Murders Motorcyclist Over N50 Fare

A disagreement over N50 has led to the
death of a motorcyclist, Michael Eze, in the
Igboeze North Local Government Area of
Enugu State.
Forty-year-old Eze was allegedly killed by
his passenger, Michael Gabriel, around
9pm on February 2, 2017, for demanding
that N50 be added to their agreed fare due
to the length of the journey.
According to Punch, Gabriel, in a fit of
anger, allegedly hit the victim with an iron
rod in the head, which made him to
collapse.
He was rushed to a private hospital in the
community where he was confirmed dead.
Policemen from the state command
arrested the suspect.
A resident, who did not want to be
identified, said Gabriel was close to his
house when the incident happened.
He said, “When the rider saw that the
house was farther than what Garbiel
described to him, he insisted that N50 must
be added to the fare they agreed on. That
was what led to the disagreement.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer,
DSP Amaraizu Ebere, confirmed the
incident.
He explained that the police had yet to
establish the cause of the disagreement.
He said, “The suspect is helping operatives
of the command in their investigations.”

3 Vagina Reconstruction Surgery Carried Out In Sokoto

The Maryam Abacha Children and Women
Hospital, Sokoto has successfully conducted
advanced vagina reconstruction surgeries
on three women with Vesico Vaginal
Fistula.
Vaginal reconstruction is the creation of a
new or artificial vagina after surgery to
remove part or the entire vagina; it is also
used as a treatment for vaginal cancer.
Sokoto state Commissioner for Health, Dr.
Balarabe Kakale, disclosed this in Gusau at
a three-day workshop organized by a
USAID-assisted Leadership, Empowerment,
Advocacy and Development Project
implemented in Sokoto and Bauchi States.
The workshop with the theme ”2016 Sokoto
State Budget Performance Review and
Public Hearing on 2017 Budget Workshop”
was a platform for the review of the
ministry’s nearly N6 billion 2016 budget.
Represented by Alhaji Mohammed Ladan, a
Director in the ministry, Kakale said the
hospital also conducted 162 VVF surgeries.
Kakale added, ‘‘Over two million children
were immunized in the state while the
process of transforming Primary Health
Care under one roof in the state has
reached over ninety per cent”.
He said other achievements recorded in the
health sector included the reactivation of
quarterly free plastic surgeries at the Noma
Hospital, Sokoto by foreign surgeons.
The commissioner disclosed that the state
government provided a N100 million take
off grant for the Contributory Health
Scheme while more than three million
people were provided free malaria drugs.
”Health staff were recruited and posted
across the state to shore up the provision
of efficient healthcare services to the
people.
”Several other construction and renovation
projects as well as provision of hospital
equipment, drugs and medicament were
executed in 2016.
”This was not, however, without challenges
like recession, delay in releases of funds,
poor internal revenue generation and
multiple taxation of private health
facilities.”

Photos: 162 stranded Nigerians repatriated from Libya

A total of 162 Nigerians stranded in Libya
were returned back home on Tuesday,
February 14th. The returnees were
received by the National Emergency
Management Agency along with the office
of the Special Assistant to the President on
Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Matters.
A chartered flight that brought the
returnees arrived the cargo wing of
Murtala Mohammed International Airport
where they were officially received at
about 4pm.Director General of NEMA was
represented by the Deputy Director Search
and Rescue Dr Onimode while the Special
Assistant to the President Hon Abike Dabiri
was represented by Mr Abdulrahman
Balogun.
Breakdown of the returnees as given by Dr
Onimode shows that 61 of them were males
and 101 females. He further explained that
among the males were 2 children and 7
infants while the females had 7 children
and 2 infants.
He also said that the return of the stranded
Nigerians were facilitated by the
International Organization for Migration as
on arrival, they were profiled, fed and
assisted back to their various towns and
homes.
